6.3.7 Special inspections
Components of load-bearing structures which are subject to high fatigue stresses, and safety components which are subject to fatigue loading shall be subjected to non-destructive testing as part of special inspections.
Fatigue stresses are considered high when the nominal stress range, multiplied by the partial factor for the fatigue loading and the correction factor, exceeds 80 % of the fatigue strength, taking into account the partial factor for the fatigue strength (see EN 131071. The suppliers of the supporting structures shall identify all affected components.
Special inspections shall be carried out on:
a) components of load-bearing structures which are subject to fatigue stresses, every 15 years or after 30,000 h of operation;
b) the mechanical brakes for the drive systems of aerial cableways and funicular railways, initially within 15 years and then every 10 years with components dismantled;
c) at least 20 % (or at least 2) of the detachable grips every 5 years or after every 10,000 h of operation. Each detachable grip shall be checked at least once every 25 years or after 50,000 h of operation;
d) at least 10 % and at least 2 of the fixed grips, with the exception of ski-tows, shall be inspected within ten years or 20,000 operating hours, then at least 10 % or at least 2 fixed grips shall be inspected every five years or every 10,000 operating hours;
e) at least 10 % of the grips of the ski-tows shall he inspected every ten years or every 20,000 operating hours;
f) the carrier trucks of uni-directional aerial cableways with dismantled components within the first
5 years (at least 5 % of these and at least 2 items), thereafter every 2 years (at least a further 5 %
and at least a further 2 items). Each carrier truck shall be checked once every 15 years or after
30,000 h of operation;
g) the carrier trucks of reversible aerial cableways and the chassis of funicular railways, including the on-board brakes, at least every 5 years, and with dismantled components at least every 10 years or after 20,000 h of operation;
h) at least 5 % and at least 2 of the hangers of cable ski lifts (excluding cable ski lifts with a carrier track) shall be inspected for the first time within five years, then at least 5 % or 2 hangers every two years. Each hanger shall be checked once every 15 years or after 30,000 h of operation;
I) at least 20 % and at least 2 of the hangers for mono-cable cableway installations with detachable grips, for double loop mono-cable cableway installations and cable ski lifts with a carrier track shall be checked within 5-year intervals. Each hanger shall be checked at least once every 25 years or after 50,000 h of operation;
j) at least 10 % and at least 2 of the hangers for mono-cable cableway installations with fixed grips shall be inspected within 10 years or 20,000 operating hours, then at least 10 % or at least 2 shall be inspected every 5 years or every 10,000 operating hours;
k) at least 10 % of the hangers of ski-tows shall be inspected every ten years or 20,000 operating hours;
I) the hangers of aerial cableways shall be inspected every 10 years or 20,000 operating hours;
m) all other safety components which are subject to fatigue loading shall be inspected initially within 15 years or after 30,000 h of operation and thereafter every 10 years or after 20,000 h of operation.
Hours of operation are to be understood as all times in which people and/or loads are being transported.
For the intervals specified in calendar years and operating hours, the interval that is reached soonest shall apply in each case.
Where deviations from the specified condition are found, the scope of testing shall be expanded to include 100 % of the same components.BS EN 1709 pdf download.
